Sarah C.
Staff Attorney
Sarah entered Tulane Law School intending to pursue a career as a public defender. After spending her 3L year in the criminal clinic and working for a brief stint working at a criminal defense practice, she decided that criminal law was not for her and went to work for a family law attorney. After working in family law for more than 10 years, Sarah became keenly aware of the need for legal assistance in family law matters and the difficulty all but very well-off parties have in obtaining such assistance. She volunteered to give free legal assistance through local bar associations and clinics and offered unbundled services to try to meet some of this need, but she always hoped to do more.
In 2019, she joined Step Forward Foundation for the opportunity to work full time providing family law legal services free of charge to clients of modest means experiencing trauma. Although she finds this work rewarding, she is aware there is still a huge demand for family law assistance not being met. She hopes to greatly increase the number of family law clients Step Forward can help. For many (if not most) parties in a family law dispute, their custody, divorce, or other family law case will be the only time they will personally interact with the judicial system. And they often have to learn how to navigate the judicial system during one of the most traumatic periods of their lives. Sarah believes that every litigant in family law court should be entitled to some legal assistance and guidance through the process regardless of their ability to hire a private attorney.
